The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff Trainee who participate in a basic law enforcement training program approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
Sheriff's Trainees will:
- Learn to interpret and apply laws contained in various state codes and local ordinances (e.g., Penal, Vehicle, Welfare and Institutions Code as well as Health and Safety Codes).
- Learn and practice basic criminal and traffic accident investigation procedures; learn law enforcement techniques, including crime scene preservation, witness interviewing and evidence collection.
- Learn and practice safety, care and usage of small firearms and department-issued weapons.
- Learn and practice vehicle and radio operation, patrol procedures and traffic control.
- Learn civil procedures and custodial responsibilities.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Promotion: Incumbents are expected to successfully complete the Training Academy. Upon graduation, Sheriff's Trainees will be promoted to Deputy Sheriff, which has a current salary of $36.71 - $57.75 hourly, plus

Applicants who have tested for Deputy Sheriff Trainee within the past six (6) months are not eligible to apply for this recruitment.
Minimum Requirements
The following are required for hire as a Deputy Sheriff Trainee:
- Be at least 21 years of age. (Applicants should be at least 20.5 years of age at time of testing.)
- Possess a high school diploma, G.E.D., or a U.S. Department of Education approved High School Equivalency Test.
- Possess a valid California Class C driver license or equivalent.
- Be a United States citizen.
- Pass a rigorous physical agility test based on California P.O.S.T. standards.
- Be fingerprinted and pass an extensive background investigation that includes interviews and a polygraph examination. Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any type of criminal probation.
- Pass a psychological evaluation and medical examination meeting California P.O.S.T. mandates, including vision and hearing standards. (The medical examination includes a drug screening to determine the presence of illegal substances.)

Selection Process
The Written Examination: Upon review of the application and supplemental questionnaire, qualified applicants will be invited to take the online written examination. Exam links will be sent via email within one week of application and will have a deadline to complete the test will be listed on the email.
The online examination will consist of an evaluation of knowledge and skills in the following topics:
- Reading Comprehension
- Written Communication
The Physical Agility Test (PAT): Applicants who are successful on the online written examination may be invited to the PAT. Applicants must bring their email invitation to the scheduled PAT appointment. Applicants will be notified of their PAT dates and other important information regarding the Physical Agility Test via email.
