Under close supervision, the Police Cadet participates in an apprenticeship program within the Police Department. This is a part-time position intended to provide the individual who is considering a career in law enforcement with the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks assisting various members of the Police Department in the performance of their duties. The Police Cadet may be assigned to any of the Bureaus or Divisions of the Department and may be rotated on a regular basis to provide enhanced experience with the various aspects of law enforcement. Participation in the apprenticeship program is limited to a maximum of six (6) years or until age 23 (may be extended to age 24 at the discretion of the Police Chief).
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade; must be between 18 and 23 years of age; possess a valid California Driver's License and maintain a reasonable driving record for qualification of coverage under the City's regular insurance policy; enrolled in an accredited college or university with a class load of at least twelve (12) semester units in classes approved by the Chief of Police (grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4-point scale).
Knowledge of: Correct usage of the English language including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary; basic understanding of the use of common office machines; proper telephone etiquette and message taking.
Ability to: Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; work independently using sound judgment and good reasoning and problem solving skills; ability to reason and react maturely; communicate clearly both orally and in writing; work cooperatively in an environment that requires team effort to achieve some goals and individual initiative to achieve others; project an image of care and concern for persons contacted in the course of employment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
