Schedule

This position is a teleworking position with extensive travel throughout the state of California and may need to accommodate the evening and weekend schedules inherent in providing services to school boards.

Summary

We are seeking an experienced governance professional with strong facilitation and consulting expertise to join our team as a Governance Consultant. Under the direction of the Senior Governance Consultant, you will design and deliver customized governance consulting services to school district and county office of education (COE) board members and superintendents as assigned. You will provide guidance to governance teams on the role of trustees; board authority; effective governance practices; defining mission, values and vision; codes of conduct, behavioral norms, and board culture; procedures, communications, and board meeting conduct; board self-evaluation and superintendent evaluation. This position aligns all consulting efforts to focus governance teams on student achievement; performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Designs and facilitates highly complex governance consulting services for school district and COE governance teams.
• Assists local school boards in developing and strengthening effective governance practices.
• Prepares clear and accurate reports on consulting outcomes and maintain appropriate records.
• Collaborates with the Senior Governance Consultant to develop consulting materials, resources, reports, program evaluations, and implement new consulting services as directed.
• Markets CSBA’s products, programs and services in alignment with consulting engagements.
• Contributes to CSBA’s overall research and policy agenda by developing and applying subject matter expertise in assigned program and policy areas.
• Based on the individual’s subject matter expertise, facilitates CSBA board development courses, including but not limited to the Masters in Governance series, pre-Conference workshops at the Annual Education Conference, and other individual courses as assigned.
• Demonstrates understanding of and adherence to CSBA values, policies and practices, and model respect, honesty and professionalism at all times.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Licenses and Certifications

• A bachelor’s degree or higher with major coursework in education, business administration, public administration, government, legal or political science, or related field with five (5) years of experience in governance consulting with a school district governance team, school district administration, school board service or related field.
• Master’s degree in education, business administration, public administration, government, legal or political science, or related field is preferred.
• Experience with public school or non-profit boards is preferred.

Knowledge of

• Principles, practices and trends in TK-12 education governance in California.
• Consulting practices including group facilitation, conflict management, board development, coaching and mentoring.
• School district operations and trends in TK-12 public education in California.
• Techniques for effectively representing CSBA in contacts with governmental agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, educational, regulatory, and legislative organizations.
• CSBA Professional Governance Standards for School Boards, Superintendent Governance Standards, and the CSBA Effective Governance System, and ability to apply them in a consulting context preferred.

Ability to

• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with governance teams, staff and stakeholders.
• Listen, facilitate discussions and address sensitive issues with diplomacy and tact.
• Analyze complex governance situations and design effective solutions.
• Explain complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Prepare clear and accurate reports on consulting outcomes.
• Speak publicly before large and small groups of individuals in a positive, inclusive, and motivational manner; make persuasive verbal presentations.
• Organize, prioritize and manage multiple assignments with minimal direction.
• Collaborate effectively with internal teams to maintain and expand consulting services.
• Facilitate a virtual environment and manage related technical functions, including but not limited to managing sound, screen sharing, breakout rooms, polls, and note taking functions preferred.

Environmental Elements & Physical Demands

• Must be able to travel extensively overnight throughout California and accommodate evening and weekend schedules for conferences, workshops and meetings throughout California.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all work.
• Ability to sit for extended periods, operate standard office equipment and drive by motor vehicle.
• Ability to sit at computer for long periods of time and have the dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, and operate standard office equipment.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, hand truck available to assist.
• Possession of, or ability to, obtain a valid California Driver’s license by time of appointment.
Limited vacation during peak periods.

• CSBA offers a hybrid work schedule, with a minimum of three (3) days in-office based out of our West Sacramento office and two (2) days working remotely.
• Paid Time Off:
  • Vacation: Accrues 10 days annually for hourly employees and 15 days annually for salary employees. The rate at which you accrue will increase annually with years of service.
  • Floating holidays: 32 hours annually accrue date of hire.
  • Separate sick leave accrual: 8 hours accrued monthly.
  • Holiday: 10 CSBA recognized holidays annually
  • December Office Closure: During the latter part of December each year CSBA closes its office. During this time, employees are paid for 6 days in addition to the December 25 and January 1 holiday.
  • Sabbatical Program: Employees with at least seven (7) years of continuous full-time employment in their current period of service are eligible for up to four (4) weeks of paid leave.
