PAL Recreation Specialists lead program participants in a variety of activities in an assigned program or service area, including but not limited to:
  • recreation activities
  • health and fitness programs
  • prevention programs
  • special events
  • marketing functions

Please Note: This position is represented by Fairfield Part-Time Employees’ Association (FPTEA), is part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied schedule to meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is typically performed at an activity site, community center and/or in an outdoor environment in various types of weather. Position may require working nights and weekends. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the City.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work may include prolonged sitting and standing, as well as light to moderate lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, carrying, reaching, stooping and pulling. Work requires manual dexterity, clear (understandable) speech, visual and hearing acuity. The ability to actively participate in recreational activities (including games), and work outdoors in both heat and cold, are also required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
PAL Recreation Specialists receive general supervision from a Recreation Program Coordinator, supervisor or manager assigned to the service area and may also receive instruction and guidance from a Program Specialist, Activity Specialist, or Recreation Specialist Senior. Incumbents of this class do not exercise supervision, but may provide direction to program participants.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: 
No prior experience is necessary.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:
Depending on assignment, possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License may be required. Possession of a valid equivalent is acceptable during the application process.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for monitoring program and site rules, policies and regulations.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, City personnel and the public.
  • Monitor behavior of program participants.
  • Conduct set up and clean-up of facility and equipment; may be charged with the opening and closing duties.
  • Assist with miscellaneous office tasks, i.e. retrieving and distributing mail, receiving shipments, delivering items to program sites.

Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of: 

  • A wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.
  • Modern office equipment, including computers.
Ability to:
  • Work with a wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.
  • Use equipment used in the area of specialization.
  • Work cooperatively in a team environment and nurture the development of staff.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule dependent upon program requirements.
  • Possess and maintain a positive "can do" attitude.
