Job Description and Duties

Visually inspect vehicles daily and report any instances of neglect, abuse or possible unreported accidents to the Division Operations Sergeant. Perform minor repair and maintenance of state vehicles.
 
Scheduling of service and repair for moderate and major repairs and maintenance of state vehicles. Road test vehicles as necessary to ascertain defects or check completed repairs. Check warranty requirements and daily vehicle deficiency reports and secure needed adjustments and repairs. Assure the delivery of automotive equipment to and from places of service and repair.
 
Maintain tool box with current tools to fit newer vehicles and order new tools and test equipment as needed. Keep a record of all patrol vehicle maintenance performed and maintain in individual vehicle folders. Enter data in Fleet Focus Program. Examine patrol vehicle invoices to ensure proper job rates are charged. Check and file repair orders and warranty repair orders related to vehicles. Maintain patrol vehicle inventory record of automotive supplies and prepare lists for regular and emergency requisitions of automotive supplies.
 
Quarterly inventory all automotive parts, tires, accessories, and fluids. Obtain bids for repairing and selling wrecked patrol vehicles, used tires, batteries, and other supplies when authorized. Strip State equipment from wrecked vehicles prior to selling. Inventory and return equipment to Fleet Operations Section as required. Perform other job-related duties as assigned or requested.
 
Non-Essential Functions: Coordinate with other Area Automotive Technicians to ensure proper reporting of defects to and use of automotive equipment. Maintain a complete file of all directives pertaining to automotive equipment. Maintain daily records of gasoline usage for the Area's vehicles. Prepare transfer sheets (CHP 57) for vehicles transferred or removed from service.

Working Conditions

Incumbents are required to crawl underneath a vehicle/down under the dashboard/into the trunk; lift and carry tires up to 60 pounds in weight; and work in varying, and sometimes extreme, temperatures.
