JOB TITLE: VARSITY HEAD COACH
BASIC FUNCTION
The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for leading and managing a comprehensive, educationbased athletic program that aligns with the mission, philosophy, and policies of the Placer Union
High School District. The Varsity Head Coach serves as a transformational leader who
prioritizes student-athlete development, character education, academic success, and positive
athletic experiences over win-loss records. This position requires strong leadership,
communication, organization, and a deep commitment to purpose-based athletics consistent with
the InSideOut Coaching philosophy.

CORE PHILOSOPHY & LEADERSHIP
The Varsity Head Coach shall:
Embrace and actively model PUHSD’s Philosophy of Student Athletics, recognizing athletics as
an extension of the educational experience.
Implement InSideOut Coaching principles, focusing on character development, life skills,
emotional well-being, and positive relationships.
Foster a program culture built on respect, effort, accountability, sportsmanship, and inclusion.
Ensure athletes, coaches, and parents represent the school and community in a positive manner at
all times.
Maintain professional conduct, language, and demeanor; avoid profanity, put-downs, or behavior
requiring “defense” of actions or words.

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT & WELFARE
The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for:
Prioritizing the physical, emotional, and academic well-being of all student-athletes.
Ensuring all athletes meet eligibility, attendance, and clearance requirements prior to
participation.
Monitoring academic progress and supporting eligibility compliance, including probationary
periods.
Enforcing expectations related to attendance, classroom behavior, and citizenship.
Ensuring compliance with concussion, injury, and medical clearance protocols, including
accident reporting and return-to-play procedures.
Maintaining safe, supervised environments at all practices, games, locker rooms, weight rooms,
travel events, and off-campus activities.

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATION
The Varsity Head Coach shall:
Oversee all levels of the program (varsity, JV, freshman where applicable) and ensure consistent
philosophy, expectations, and communication.
Schedule contests in accordance with CIF, Sac-Joaquin Section, league, and district bylaws.
Attend required league meetings and collaborate with the Athletic Director on scheduling and
logistics.
Develop and submit rosters, maintain MaxPreps data, and meet all roster deadlines.
Monitor and enforce CIF contact-hour limits and practice regulations.
Ensure facilities, locker rooms, courts, fields, and equipment are kept clean, safe, and organized.
Coordinate facility usage and submit required requests through approved systems (e.g.,
Facilitron).

STAFFING & SUPERVISION
The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for:
Selecting, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating assistant and lower-level coaches.
Ensuring all paid and volunteer coaches are fully cleared through the district prior to working
with athletes.
Verifying completion of required certifications (CPR, First Aid, concussion, mandated reporter,
etc.).
Preventing any unauthorized or uncleared individual from coaching or supervising athletes.
Ensuring coaches maintain professional conduct and comply with district, CIF, and social media
policies.

COMMUNICATION & PARENT ENGAGEMENT
The Varsity Head Coach shall:
Maintain clear, consistent, and respectful communication with athletes, parents, staff, and
administrators.
Communicate weekly schedules, expectations, and updates to parents.
Clearly explain playing time philosophy, team roles, and performance expectations.
Establish and follow district-approved communication protocols for resolving concerns.
Conduct a Parent Sports Night each season covering program philosophy, expectations,
schedules, communication guidelines, and fundraising.
Ensure FERPA compliance and confidentiality at all times.

CONDUCT, DISCIPLINE & EQUITY
The Varsity Head Coach is expected to:
Enforce all PUHSD Athletic Handbook and Student Handbook policies.
Maintain a zero-tolerance stance toward bullying, hazing, harassment, intimidation, or
discrimination.
Address misconduct promptly and collaborate with administration when disciplinary action is
required.
Educate athletes on appropriate behavior, sportsmanship, and responsible social media use.
Model and enforce district social media expectations for both coaches and athletes.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & FUNDRAISING
The Varsity Head Coach shall:
Manage the program budget responsibly and in compliance with ASB and district procedures.
Ensure all purchases are pre-approved through proper purchase orders.
Lead and support fundraising efforts to maintain adequate program funding.
Encourage (but not require) athletic donations and work toward district donation goals.
Maintain accountability for uniforms, gear, and equipment inventory.

TRANSPORTATION & TRAVEL
The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for:
Following district transportation policies, including use of approved drivers and vehicles.
Securing approvals for overnight, out-of-area, and out-of-state trips within required timelines.
Providing itineraries, emergency contacts, and supervision plans for all trips.

COMPLIANCE & PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS
The Varsity Head Coach must:
Know and comply with all CIF, Section, League, and PUHSD rules and bylaws.
Attend required trainings, meetings, and professional development.
Maintain appropriate physical and mental fitness for supervision duties.
Abstain from alcohol, marijuana, or illegal substances during any school-related activity.
Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
CIF coaching certification (or ability to obtain)
Previous Varsity Coaching Experience Preferred
CPR, First Aid, concussion, and mandated reporter certification
Completion of all district clearance requirements (Live Scan, TB, training modules)
Knowledge of sport-specific rules and CIF regulations
Demonstrated commitment to education-based athletics and student development
