ESS Substitute School Safety Assistant
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Principal or site administrator, the ESS Substitute School Safety Assistant assists school administration in ensuring the safety of students and school district personnel; continuously monitoring student activities during school hours in and around the school facility ensuring any crime and crime related activities occurring in or around school campuses are immediately reported to the appropriate personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in ensuring enforcement of federal, state, and local criminal laws and ordinances and assists in making arrests when necessary. (I.e. Citizen's Arrest-California Penal Code Section 837).
- Assists with investigations which may involve students and/or staff in areas of responsibility.
- Patrols and monitors school sites via foot or bicycle.
- Assists in keeping unauthorized people off of the school campus to ensure safety of student population.
- Assists in preventing/mitigating threats from aggressive, abusive or emotionally unstable students and assists with conflict resolution and mediation as required.
- Establishes and maintains a positive relationship with students, parents/guardians and school personnel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/TRAINING/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Additional college coursework in criminal justice or directly related field of study from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation is desirable
- California Security Guard Card is highly desirable
- Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for approved training programs is required
EXPERIENCE:
Experience serving as a security guard in a school or governmental agency environment is desirable.:

- Must be in general good health as the job requires physical strength, stamina, agility, dexterity, good hearing, and good central and peripheral vision
- Effective communication and public and human relations strategies, methods, and techniques
- Effective conflict resolution strategies, methods, and techniques
- Principles, methods, techniques, and strategies of data gathering and survey research
ABILITY TO:
- Maintain composure and emotional control in stressful interpersonal situations and in unpleasant and extreme environments
- Understand and communicate effectively and persuasively in oral and written form, and convey information in understandable terms appropriate to intended audience
- Adjust quickly to changes in assignments and priorities, Learn and accurately interpret and administer legal mandates, policies, and regulations
- Understand, follow and effectively communicate fire drill, emergency drill and school lockdown protocols ensuring that the students understand and follow established safety procedures and processes
Qualification Requirements:
- Tuberculosis (TB) Test
- Department of Justice Background Check
- CPR Certificate
Education requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent + relevent course work.
