DEFINITIONUnder supervision, to keep assigned building spaces clean and orderly; to prepare rooms for meetings; and to perform related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSPositions in this class require a minimal amount of previous custodial or general maintenance experience. Positions in this class perform work which is highly structured, which seldom varies, and which is performed in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to the supervisor for instructions. -
Examples of Duties

Cleans offices and other areas in public buildings; sweeps, mops, strips and waxes floors; vacuums carpeted areas; dusts and polishes stainless steel and furniture, woodwork and Venetian blinds; replenishes supplies; cleans base-boards; cleans stoves and ovens; performs minor repair work to plumbing fixtures; cleans refrigerators; sweeps sidewalks and entry ways; cleans blackboards; maintains inventory of restroom and cleaning supplies; sets up rooms for meetings; empties and cleans waste receptacles; washes windows; polishes metal work; turns out lights and locks doors and windows; performs minor building and related equipment maintenance repair work; maintains proper care of equipment and materials used in the work; and performs related work as required.

LICENSE REQUIRED
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License, a good driving record.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
• Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Experience:
• One year of custodial experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Basic math;
• Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the custodial trade;
• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Ability to:
• Perform routine cleaning work, including washing, dusting, waxing, polishing and sweeping;
• Read, understand and apply simple materials;
• Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Clovis
Located in the northeast quadrant of the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area, Clovis is situated in the midst of the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. Since its incorporation in 1912, Clovis has been the “Gateway to the Sierra.” Dedicated to promoting planned growth while retaining its unique western atmosphere, the City’s population has more than doubled since 1985, reaching the current level of close to 129,000, and encompassing over 28 square miles in area.
A Brief History of Clovis
The City of Clovis was named after its public-spirited pioneer, Clovis M. Cole, a man who spent nearly all of his life in the vicinity. The area was known for its thousands of acres of wheat, which he had developed in the Fresno County area. The first thoughts of settlement, however, are credited to Padre Martin, who explored the area in 1806 while searching for a mission site. Missionaries and trappers were the first non-native people to roam the area. Miners soon followed during the “gold rush” period, displacing the many Native American tribes that were settled in the foothills and near the rivers.
Another earlier settler, Marcus Pollasky, proposed and coordinated the construction of a railroad through the grain, cattle, and mining country and into the timber-rich forests of the nearby Sierra. The City eventually grew up around the San Joaquin Division of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which played an important role in the founding and growth of Clovis. In addition to the arrival of the “Iron Horse,” factors such as completing the 42-mile-long Shaver log flume, developing the 40-acre Clovis mill and finishing plant, expanding grain production, and raising livestock all combined to ensure the founding of Clovis in 1891.
