Job Description

A USPS mail carrier's job involves delivering and collecting mail and packages along an assigned route, both on foot and by vehicle, in all weather conditionsKey duties include sorting mail, loading and unloading mail trucks, getting signatures for special deliveries, and interacting with customers to answer questions, provide forms, and sell postal products like stamps and money orders. 
 
Primary duties
  • Delivery and collection: Deliver letters, documents, and packages to homes and businesses and collect outgoing mail. 
     
  • Sorting: Sort mail for each delivery in the correct sequence before leaving the post office. 
     
  • Loading/unloading: Load and unload mail and packages onto and off of mail trucks. 
     
  • Customer service: Answer customer questions about postal regulations, provide forms like change-of-address cards, and sell stamps and money orders. 
     
  • Special handling: Obtain signatures for registered, certified, and insured mail. 
     
  • Reporting: Maintain logs, report unusual circumstances, and communicate any delays to supervisors. 
     
Requirements and qualifications
  • Physical: 
    Ability to lift up to 70 pounds, work in all weather conditions, and walk for long periods.
  • Legal: 
    Must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver's license and legal authorization to work in the US.
  • Other: 
    Must pass a background check and a drug test.
  • Skills: 
    A fast learner who can pay close attention to detail and work independently after training. 
     
Work environment
  • Carriers work both indoors at the post office and outdoors along their routes.
  • Delivery routes can be in cities, towns, or rural areas.
  • The work is performed rain or shine, and snow, cold, and heat
