Substitute Teacher - San Bernardino County

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The substitute teacher works in the classroom to implement education and training programs. The substitute teacher directs, assists and encourages the completion of all teacher initiated activities in a variety of
educational settings, including:

Alternative Education Programs: Substitute Teachers working in the Alternative Education programs will assist in maintaining a safe classroom environment and provide academic training and supervision of "at-risk”
youth through the following programs: Community Schools, providing academic, social skills and mental health development to students from grades 7-12 who have been expelled or referred by their local school
districts or Probation; Juvenile Court Schools, bringing academic, vocational and computerized instruction, along with improvement of self-esteem and social skills, to Juvenile Hall to serve students who are wards of
the court.

Special Education Programs: Substitute Teachers working in the Special Education programs will assist in providing academic and self-help skills training to severely mentally and/or physically disabled students from
birth to age 22. Typical disabling conditions affecting students in these programs include: autism, blindness, deafness, intellectually disabled, serious emotional disturbance, orthopedic impairment, multiple disabilities,
traumatic brain injury, visual, speech, language or hearing impairment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Implement teacher lessons in one or more of the following curriculum areas: academic, vocational education, social skills, health development and/or childbirth preparation and parenting, language development, sensory/motor, arts & crafts, household arts;
• Implement student care activities such as: toileting, diapering, face and hand washing, manipulation of clothing and feeding;
• Preparation of educational materials and teaching aids;
• Effectively supervise students;
• Maintain classroom records;
• Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with parents, school district personnel, law enforcement, health services and social services representatives;
• Implement activities the teacher has introduced.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California teaching credential or an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit;
• Passing scores in all sections of the CBEST exam;
• Knowledge of, and ability to perform, basic arithmetic functions;
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Successful experience with students moderate to severe with moderate to severe disabilities, emotionally disturbed and/or behavior disorder students.
• Training or education in related areas such as child development, health care, special education.
• Experience with computer operations.
• Valid California Driver's License.

• If applying for an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit you will need to submit original transcripts verifying your Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited university or college along with original verification of your passing scores on CBEST;
• If you have not passed the CBEST, we may be able to use your coursework to meet the basic skills requirement. If you have taken course at a regionally accredited college or university, with a grade of B or better and at least 3 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) in reading, writing and mathematics proficiency.
