The County of Monterey Office of the County Counsel serves as the in-house legal counsel for the County of Monterey, Board of Supervisors, and all County officers, departments, agencies, boards, and commissions, as well as liaison and support to the Civil Grand Jury. In addition to providing legal advice, the Office represents the County in civil and special litigation in state and federal courts, various administrative proceedings, and coordinates the services of outside legal counsel. The Office of the County Counsel consists of four divisions: General Government, Litigation, Land Use and Risk Management.

Under the general direction of the County Counsel and Chief Assistant County Counsel, the Assistant County Counsel assists in planning, organizing and managing the County Counsel’s office; acts for the County Counsel in the absence of the County Counsel and Chief Assistant County Counsel or at their direction; directs and supervises the work of a major legal division; personally performs highly complex and difficult legal work in providing legal counsel to County agencies and special districts; and performs related work as is required. The incumbent may be delegated responsibilities for the overall day-to-day administration and management of some or all of the functions of the Office. As such, the incumbent uses considerable independent judgment and discretion in staff supervision, and delegated department administration and management. Work goals, objectives and performance are set with and subject to performance review by the County Counsel.
