Job Description

Tesla’s Cell Engineering team at San Diego is looking for an exceptional talent as a Mechatronics Engineer, to lead and develop next generation prototype manufacturing capabilities.

This role includes design and implementation of automated equipment in processes and advanced manufacturing, including building up and commissioning key equipment. Key equipment will include but not limited to winding, welding, electrolyte filling, test automation, and customized retrofits.

The Role

  • Drive development of innovative manufacturing processes and equipment that enable improved battery performance and cost
  • Lead equipment retrofits and upgrades, especially with hands-on experience
  • Design robust, stable, fault-tolerant systems with error handling and recovery
  • Program and debug structure text and ladder logic code on multiple PLC controller platforms (Siemens, Beckhoff, B&R, Omron)
  • Use Python scripting and SQL to interface equipment to collect data into dashboard databases
  • Create intuitive operator touchscreen interfaces using WinCC/MappView/TwinCAT HMI and SCADA dashboards screens using Ignition, Grafana
  • Set up and tune servo drives and VFDs for fast and smooth operation (Schneider, B&R, Beckhoff, Siemens, SEW)
  • Design and implement control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment as per codes and standards
  • Manage suppliers during specification, design, buyoff and installation of automated manufacturing equipment
  • Build process documentation to accurately define the process to cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.)
