Job Description

The purpose of the Tesla Materials Engineering organization is to facilitate the Tesla Mission of building a world of amazing abundance through the identification, development and insertion of advanced materials and processes. In this role, you will apply the fundamentals of material science to develop materials and processes, with an emphasis on gearing materials, processing, and manufacturing technology. This role also will be supporting other Tesla Engineering and Manufacturing functions with materials expertise. This position will require up to 20% travel, both domestic and international.

The Role

  • Contribute to the development of new materials and manufacturing processes that revolutionize Tesla’s products
  • Evaluate trade-offs between material performance, cost, and manufacturability to support material selection
  • Assist in translating qualitative design needs into quantifiable material requirements and document them in material specifications
  • Develop and execute test plans to characterize application-specific material properties and translate results into design values for detailed engineering use
  • Drive root cause analysis and issue resolution of material-related issues

Requirements

  • Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong knowledge in physical metallurgy, mechanical behavior of materials, thermodynamics, and phase transformations
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated success in maturation of materials and processes for gearing applications
  • Demonstrated experience in gear failure modes and root cause analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in cold forming of gears in simulation (Simufact or similar) and manufacturing
  • Experience in gear thermal processing methods for desired microstructure and distortion reduction
  • Experience with standard material testing methods and data interpretation (tensile testing, hardness testing, metallography)
