Comments and Other Information
Under general supervision, teaches and instructs students in grades 6 through 12 in secondary
academic subject matter, social, behavioral and other educational skill areas; plans, develops,
organizes and conducts a comprehensive educational program for secondary level students;
assists secondary level students with making appropriate lifestyle adjustments and with the
determination of leading college and career choices; and performs other related functions as
required. This position reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
● Teach and instruct in subject matter areas commonly found in the OMI adopted
curriculum and a comprehensive secondary education program.
● Utilize an adopted course of study, instructional program guidelines, and other materials
in planning and developing lesson plans and teaching outlines.
● Pursue a variety of methodologies in teaching and instructing pupils, including lectures,
demonstrations, discussions, lectures and laboratory experiences.
● Conduct teaching and instructional activities using educational equipment, materials,
books and other learning aids.
● Differentiate lesson plans to engage and challenge students.
● Plan, develop and utilize a variety of instructional materials and aids appropriate to the
intellectual and instructional levels of pupils from varied socioeconomic and cultural
backgrounds, and who possess a range of mental and emotional maturity.
● Review, analyze and evaluate the history, background and assessment of pupils in
designing instructional programs to meet individual educational needs.
● Individualize and adapt educational processes and procedures to enhance student
educational opportunities.
● Provide group and individual instruction to motivate pupils, and effectively utilize the
time available for instructional activities.
● Maintain appropriate standards of student behavior, using behavioral management
strategies and techniques, including positive reinforcement and behavior shaping
procedures.
● Review, analyze, evaluate, and report student academic, social, and emotional growth.
● Prepare, administer, score, record and report the results of criterion referenced tests, and
administer, score, record and report the results of group standardized tests in evaluating
student growth and progress.
● Counsel, confer and communicate with parents, school and staff regarding student
progress, and in the interpretation of the educational program.
● Cooperatively pursue alternative solutions to ameliorate student learning problems and to
enhance expanded academic, social and emotional growth opportunities.
● Select and requisition educational supplies, materials, books, equipment and learning
aids.
● Perform a variety of non instructional duties, including curriculum, instructional
development and consultation activities, and student supervision activities.
● Maintain records as required by OMI and/or state and make appropriate reports as
directed.
● Participate in school wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities.
● Participate in faculty and/or school meetings, committees and the sponsorship of student
activities.
● Participate in Student Success Team meetings (SST), Individualized Education Program
(IEP) and English Language Development (ELD) meetings as requested/required.
● Participate in continued professional development.
● Design and instruct students using effective research based instructional practices that
address the cultural context of English learners and in alignment with the CA standards
for English Language Development (ELD).
● Collaborates with Student Services Coordinator in developing appropriate strategies to
meet the unique needs of students who are English learners.
● Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Oakland Military Institute – College Preparatory Academy (OMI) determines whether a
candidate is qualified based on fulfillment of prerequisites, relevant work experience, ability to
perform the essential functions, reference checks, effective interpersonal and communication
skills demonstrated by interview performance and/or writing samples, and achievement on
performance-based assessments (if applicable) that demonstrate the candidate possesses the
requisite knowledge, skills and abilities. Meeting the prerequisites only satisfies the initial
screening process and does not indicate the candidate is qualified to perform the essential
functions of the position.
Knowledge of:
● Principles, theories, methods, techniques and strategies pertaining to teaching and
instruction of secondary level students.
● Academic, social and behavioral characteristics of secondary level students.
● Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and educational trends and
research findings pertaining to comprehensive secondary programming.
● Behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques and methods, and
conflict resolution procedures.
● Socioeconomic and cultural background differences of the general school population.
● Technology including computers and computer programs.
Ability to:
● Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program
for students at the secondary level.
● Provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for students of varied
socioeconomic levels and cultural backgrounds.
● Effectively assess the instructional and educational needs of students, and design, develop
and implement sound instructional and educational programs.
● Provide a motivating and stimulating learning environment.
● Perform research and development activities pertaining to curriculum and instructional
programs, and innovative and creative pilot projects designed to enhance students’
educational opportunities and experiences.
● Communicate effectively in oral and written form using grammatically correct English
language.
● Understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability
controls.
● Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
● Utilize technology and operate computers and computer programs.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge
and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
Experience: Successful completion of student teaching at a recognized college or university;
participation in a recognized teacher intern program; or successful classroom teaching
experience, preferably in a secondary classroom setting.
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university
with emphasis in an academic major or minor subject matter field (or closely related field)
commonly taught at secondary grade levels. Valid credential in respective assignment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements: Consistent mental alertness; sitting or standing for extended periods of
time; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects up to 30 pounds, occasionally 30+ pounds;
bending and twisting at the waist; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally;
dexterity of both hands and fingers while performing duties; seeing to read, write and use the
computer; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone, and to
make presentations.
Certification Requirement: Possession of a valid California credential authorizing service as a
teacher of secondary level students in major or minor subject matter fields and areas assigned.
Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming and personality that establish a desirable example for
students.

OMI MISSION STATEMENT
The Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy (OMI) develops leaders of character by providing a rigorous seven-year college preparatory program to promote excellence in the four pillars of academics, leadership, citizenship, and athletics.
PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
OMI’s four pillars are ACADEMICS, LEADERSHIP, CITIZENSHIP, and ATHLETICS. Using a military framework, the goal of OMI is to graduate cadets who are capable of meeting the admissions requirements for any college in the nation and who are prepared for their roles as future leaders of character.
The demanding ACADEMIC program consists of language arts, math, science and history, as well as world languages, fine arts, leadership, and physical fitness training. OMI seeks and supports students who have ambition and are ready to take responsibility for their own learning. OMI also offers honors, advanced placement, and college level courses. We also understand that some of our cadets enter OMI performing below grade level, and we require these students to accelerate learning through before school, after school, Saturday and summer academic support programs. Through hard work, determination, and a positive attitude, all students are expected to do whatever it takes to meet OMI’s rigorous academic standards and achieve proficiency on the Common Core State Standards. We partner with parents to communicate about student progress and help all students succeed to the best of their abilities. Parents have a set of duties to fulfill their role as the primary educators of their children.
The military framework of the school develops LEADERSHIP and promotes a sense of pride and community as it requires cadets to wear a proper complete uniform each school day and begin each day with a formation that includes patriotic exercises. All cadets participate as members of the California Cadet Corps, and are assigned to units within a military chain of command (squads, platoons, companies, and battalions within the Corps of OMI Cadets). Cadets assume increased responsibility through various positions of leadership during their tenure at OMI. Each academic classroom uses military protocols and cadet leadership structures to promote good order and discipline. Cadets also learn military customs and courtesies and achieve promotions and awards for their accomplishments. The military dimension of the school promotes patriotic spirit and respect for the democratic ideals of our society.
Cadets learn what is expected of them at the Summer Camp prior to their enrollment at OMI, a camp which thoroughly introduces new students to the CITIZENSHIP expectations of the school. The disciplinary system, patterned after the military model, is fair and predictable. It uses a merit and demerit system that provides both positive and negative consequences. All cadets share a common set of duties they are expected to fulfill as well as a code of honor requiring absolute integrity. Cadets who do not meet our expectations for conduct, integrity, and/or who do not fulfill their duties forfeit their opportunity to attend OMI.
ATHLETICS is an integral part of the total educational experience here at OMI. OMI cadets are provided frequent opportunities to participate in interscholastic and intramural individual and team athletic development activities and competition. In addition to fulfilling physical fitness goals, being involved in athletics provides cadets with opportunities to develop leadership skills and to learn the ideals of fair play and ethical behavior necessary for competition and cooperation in our society. It also provides our students with the unique opportunities for self-discipline and self-sacrifice, as well as loyalty to the community, the school, and the team.
Through the four pillars of academics, leadership, citizenship, and athletics, OMI prepares students for successful admission to college, completion of college, and entry into the adult world as leaders of character who make our world a better place, do the right thing, and treat others the way they want to be treated.
