Adult Residential Facilities support activities of daily living (e.g., bathing, dressing, medication administration, housekeeping, and laundry), and provide communal food service and social activities for primarily adults younger than age 60 who have developmental, mental health, and/or physical disabilities. They do not provide 24/7 skilled nursing care as one would receive in a nursing home. However, some limited skilled care can be provided via onsite nurses or by coordinating with home health and hospice to visit the resident in the facility. In California, adult residential facilities are licensed by the California Department of Social Services.
