The job of the GNC Engineer is to design, test, and validate control systems for unmanned air vehicles. The candidate must be knowledgeable in general principles of stability and control, preferably as applied to fixed-wing aircraft.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Simulation Model Generation and Database Implementation
Implement equations of motion, environment, aerodynamics, propulsion, gravity, turbulence, and sensor models in 6DOF simulation models
Create and utilize aerodynamic, propulsion, and mass databases
Facilitate scripting and model development efforts to support trimming, linearization, and running aircraft flight dynamic simulation in the MATLAB/Simulink environment
Guidance, Navigation, and Control Algorithm Design
Derive subsystem requirements and specifications, including: sensors and control actuation components
Support subsystem testing and verification
Control system gain and filter design and stability margin evaluation
Perform non-linear robustness testing
Perform system level performance analysis and requirements validation/verification
Design and implement operator interfaces, autonomous logic algorithms, waypoint following and path generation algorithms
Flight test planning and support
Provide input for creation of flight test plans by defining required test points and detailed test methods
Support flight test events and provide real-time monitoring of GNC algorithm performance
Support post-flight data analysis and evaluation of GNC algorithms and Simulation model characterization
Verify flight dynamics, flying qualities, and aircraft flight path performance match design requirements and simulation expectations

Support other unmanned aerial vehicle design, development, production, and sustainment efforts as a member of the Flight Sciences group, which may include the following:
Participate in wind tunnel testing
Supports proposal efforts by providing performance data, system descriptions, and acceptance plans

Job Description:
Perform a variety of engineering tasks in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles and related subsystems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The duties and responsibilities listed below apply to all levels of Aero/Flight Sciences Engineers. Each successive level of Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer builds on job functions listed for the previous level(s) of Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer .
Flight test planning, execution, and analysis
Preliminary aircraft design
Aircraft performance modeling and simulation
Control system design and analysis
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis
Aerodynamic loads determination
Wind tunnel test planning, execution, and analysis
Support various hardware/software design, test, troubleshooting, and documentation activities
Analyses in support of requirements generation, verification, and validation
Prepare formal, controlled engineering documentation (ie. drawings, specifications, test procedures, technical reports, etc.).
Prepare and presents design review material in support of technical interchange meetings with suppliers and external/internal customers.
Support customer training activities
Foreign and domestic travel to support flight test activities
Manages effort and time within the budget and schedule provided for the task.
Follows safety precautions.
Ensures that the work area and equipment are kept clean.
Complies with established QMS procedures.
Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer I
Performs simple engineering tasks as assigned by their Manager.
Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer II
Performs moderate engineering tasks as assigned by their Manager.
Acts as lead engineer as required for various contract deliverables.
Presents design review and technical interchange material to major customers.
Develop analyses in support of requirements generation, verification, and validation.
Provides onsite support during various test activities.
Mentors Level I Aero/Flight Sciences Engineers.
Supports business development efforts in preparation of proposals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer (Basic - all levels)
Understanding of basic aerodynamics

Additional Desirable Skills (all levels):
MATLAB and Simulink experience strongly preferred.
Experience in STAR CCM+ is strongly preferred.
Familiarity with unmanned aircraft systems and operations is preferred.
Exposure to jet propulsion technology and composite airframe design methods are desirable.
Exposure to airworthiness certification of aircraft (military or civilian) is desirable.
Understanding of autopilot flight control design is desirable
Familiarity with C/C++ and Java software is desirable.

Outer Mold Line (OML) definition including surface shaping, sizing and placement.

Experience and Skills:
Each successive level of Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer builds on the identified education and experience qualifications listed for the previous level(s) of Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer .
Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer I
Requires BS degree in Engineering (Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering preferred).
Relevant experience and/or coursework preferred.
Aero/Flight Sciences Engineer II
Requires BS degree in Engineering (Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering preferred).
3 + years related experience in related engineering discipline.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Office and manufacturing environment
Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time
Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, 10-key, phones)
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
Frequent outside contact with customers and suppliers.
May travel to support flight test activities, new business development, and customer maintenance occasionally.
May work extended hours or weekends.
May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).
