Job Description


The primary purpose of the MACHINIST, WG-3414-5/8/11, is to perform machining operations and welding to accomplish the manufacture and repair of aircraft components, tools,equipment, parts, and special tools.

Conditions of Employment

CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the California National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

Non-DMOS/DAFSC applicants are encouraged to apply for the positions if experience is held. A two year compatibility waiver MAY be obtained.

(Applicants who are currently in other Air/Army branches and NOT currently a member of the California National Guard (CNG) must become a member of a compatible unit of assignment within the Air Force CNG commensurate with the military grade listed in this announcement prior to federal assignment).

Military Grades: E-2 through E-6

Recruitment/Relocation Incentive MAY BE authorized, subject to funding and approval.

Relocation Costs MAY BE authorized subject to provisions of the Joint Travel Regulation, funding, and an agency determination that a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move is in the Government's best interest.

Must maintain appropriate level of security clearance.
Must wear appropriate military uniform including required grooming standards.
Must maintain a compatible military unit, grade and job assignment as required by current directives.
Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.


General Experience: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes. Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools.

MACHINIST, WG-3414-05 (Trainee): Must have at least 6 months experience or training which demonstrates the ability to use common hand tools and make repetitive repairs. Must have basic knowledge of the type of work performed by the occupational series. Experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the simpler and routine duties of the trade.

MACHINIST, WG-3414-08 (Trainee): Must have at least 12 months experience or training performing machining operations on conventional and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine tools to include aligning parts. Experience, education or training in the use of measuring instruments such as scales, micrometers, vernier calipers, height gages and various standard or preset snap, plug or ring gages. Must be able to follow detailed oral or written instructions.

MACHINIST, WG-3414-5/8/11: Must have at least 18 months experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments. Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined. Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.

TRAINEE POSITION: Applicants not meeting full qualifications for the WG-11 position indicated above may be considered for WG-05/08 trainee, if qualified. Statement-of-Difference of qualification requirements for each are indicated. If appointed as trainee, the selectee may be non-competitively promoted to WG-11 upon meeting full qualifications and recommendations of supervisor.
