About the Position

The Sheriff's Office is seeking a self-motivated, hard-working individual to fill the position of Cook! As a Cook, you will be responsible for preparing and cooking all types of foods in large quantities for the County Jail. This position involves working in a fast paced environment to follow recipes and prepare special diets as directed, using a variety of kitchen equipment such as blenders, mixers, grinders, and slicers. Additionally, you are responsible to ensure food is properly stored and leftover foods are used according to prescribed procedures, as well as ensuring dishes and equipment is properly cleaned. In this position you may be required to load and drive large transportation vehicles for purposes of delivering meals and you may also be required to operate communications radio.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have previous experience cooking large quantities of food and will be comfortable working in a kitchen environment for the Jail, directing the work of assigned kitchen staff and working on and with kitchen equipment and supplies.  A strong work ethic and communication skills are key.  The ability to understand and follow recipes, written and oral instructions, and keep simple records is a must, as is the ability to be a team player and work cooperatively with others, including resident inmates of institutions such as the County Jail.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Cook I:  One year of experience in commercial or institutional cooking or the equivalent combination of institutional/commercial cooking education courses and experience.

Cook II:  Two years of experience in commercial or institutional cooking or the equivalent combination of institutional/commercial cooking education courses and experience.
 
Cook III:  Three years of experience in commercial or institutional cooking or the equivalent combination of institutional/commercial cooking education courses and experience.  At least six months of the required experience must have been in a correctional institution or similar secure detention facility with inmate/detained minor supervision responsibilities.
