Job Description

ESTIMATOR

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Learn the use of the Costing/Estimating Spreadsheet to ascertain JLS’ break-even cost of all estimates/proposals
  • As necessary coordinate sub-contractor solicitations and job-walks
  • Determine labor and construction equipment costs
  • As necessary for estimates, review project plans, requirements and specifications allowing accurate quantity takeoffs and materials pricing, making site visits as necessary to visually confirm job conditions
  • Meet and maintain bidding and work schedules
  • Submit requisitions for purchase of materials
  • Compare competitive trade bids
  • Review preliminary quotes and pre-bid estimates with Project Manager and secure all bid documents (bid forms and quote letters)
  • Prepare subcontractor bid list and submit drawings to subcontractors
  • Participate in bid compilation on bid day
  • Assist jobsite staff with estimates after bid award
  • Perform post-bid buyouts (if applicable)
  • Maintain excellent relationships with suppliers and vendors
  • Supervise and train estimating staff (if applicable)
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned
  • Meet the monthly sales objectives as mutually agreed with the VP Operations
  • Continually pursue new relationships with prospective customers and maintain relationships with existing customers within the geographical trade area
  • Submit Weekly Report to the VP Operations containing actual results for the prior week every Tuesday by 8:00 AM
  • Maintain the Outlook calendar in current order at all times and make certain both the Coordinator and VP Operations have access
  • Assist in maintaining the data base by providing accurate real time information on prospects and clients
  • Attend all bi-weekly safety meetings held at corporate office every other Tuesday at 11:30 AM
  • Make a continuous effort to learn more about the construction industry and specifically about each facet of the industry for which JLS provides products and services
  • As needed, communicate and coordinate with the VP Operations to provide final quotes and close sales, and submit for pre-approval all estimates/bids/proposals exceeding $10,000
  • Resolve all customer issues in a manner that is satisfactory to both the customer and JLS
  • Seek prior approval of the VP Operations before committing company resources of labor and equipment to a specific schedule
  • Coordinate with the Project Manager and VP Operations for the proper scheduling of work with regard to the desired (contract) completion date
  • Attend trade shows and other events offering sales opportunities as requested and/or pre-approved by the VP Operations
  • Attend all training as requested by the VP Operations
  • Submit all expense reports, including receipts by the work day following the purchase date
  • Attend all regularly scheduled weekly sales meeting, typically Wednesday at 6:15 AM
  • Perform any other tasks or duties that may be assigned from time to time by the VP Operations

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Copy of driver’s record or letter of clearance from the DMV
  • Clean drug test and agreement to submit to future random testing
  • Must provide a dependable vehicle, capable of carrying all necessary equipment, kept in clean and presentable condition at all times when representing JLS. Personal vehicle insurance must meet minimum JLS insurance requirements
  • Must be willing to travel as required for sales success, training, organizing, and facilitating the work
  • Must be in possession at all times of a ladder, digital camera, measuring tape, wheel, and all safety equipment that may be required at job sites (PPE), i.e. hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots and attire that does not increase safety risk. Most of the foregoing equipment and PPE are provided by JLS
  • Four years Estimating experience within the construction industry
  • Must be a self-starter comfortable meeting new people and being in unfamiliar situations. Should be the type of person who can quickly put others at ease and inspire trust.
  • Must have strong ability to comprehend the essence of all projects undertaken by JLS and is able to detail all aspects of potential jobs and related costs into the format of an accurate estimate
  • Must possess business knowledge and the skills related to computer literacy including specific knowledge of Word and Excel and the flexibility to work with software packages such as JLS’ present estimating software
  • Must understand basic mathematical computations as necessary for estimating, drafting proposals, and calculating gross margins
  • Must be able to identify materials, labor and all other direct costs related to estimates/proposals
  • Must be comfortable working with all other JLS team members to gain insights from all internal resources
  • Must either be knowledgeable or able and willing to become knowledgeable of all products/services offered by JLS
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in written form
  • Must exhibit the willingness and the ability to continuously conduct oneself in accordance with the high company standards of JLS
  • Ability to effectively deal with customers, employees, and/or vendors on a regular basis
  • Must be able to work whatever hours are necessary to be responsive to customers, prospective customers, vendors and sub-contractors
  • Must have the ability to lift 40 pounds with regularity
