Join a team of other dedicated electricians to help provide services to a fleet of diesel electric locomotives responsible for transporting goods across North America. As a Diesel Electrician for Union Pacific, you’ll inspect, diagnose and repair the electrical components of diesel electric locomotives of various ages and models. You’ll be responsible for performing scheduled electrical inspections and maintenance and will also be challenged to solve various malfunctions in locomotive control circuits and components. Your goal is to ensure the electrical components of Union Pacific’s locomotives are serviced safely, efficiently and in compliance with standards so they can offer safe, reliable transport of customer goods.

Accountabilities

  • Perform, with use of schematics and location circuit plans, scheduled electrical inspections of various components and electrical circuit tests in compliance with company and industry standards
  • Diagnose electrical malfunctions in locomotive control circuits and components, assess the nature of each problem and identify the necessary corrective action
  • Perform maintenance and repair of electrical components in locomotive cabs or electrical compartments, and perform maintenance to miscellaneous equipment using schematics and location circuit plans
  • Work with shop machines and tools
  • Plan and coordinate work activities, determine equipment needs and develop sequences of steps needed to complete work
  • Communicate with others, verbally and in writing, technical information, job procedure recommendations, and other work-related information
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

Qualifications

Required
  • Basic keyboarding skills
  • Basic mathematic skills
  • Ability to speak English in a clear, concise manner to communicate with coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Education or work experience in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors OR current journeyman's electrical card
  • Ability to read and understand all instructions including operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to read electrical schematics and prints

Preferred
  • An Associate's degree
  • Certified and/or licensed as a an electrician
  • Experience with large motor generators and/or high-voltage circuitry
  • Experience working with electronics and/or electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience working in an environment that requires you to wear personal protective equipment such as shock and arc flash clothing, safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats and hearing protection
  • Experience working with, on and around moving heavy equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Must have normal color vision
  • Able to occasionally walk, climb, and maintain balance on ladders, stairs, and steps in a safe manner
  • Able to occasionally bend, stoop, and kneel
  • Able to occasionally peform overhead work for short periods of time
  • Able to remain standing or sitting for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort
  • Able to respond quickly to sounds
  • Have normal depth perception to judge the speed and distance of locomotives being moved in the service area
  • Able to make occasional to frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects
  • Must be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays, and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances
  • Able to detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 65 lbs
  • Able to safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces

Work Conditions

  • Expected to work varied schedules, including on-call, overtime, shifts, 7 days a week, as well as weekends and holidays
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to read and understand job information written in English
