Summary

This position is located in the Patient Business Office Service Line, Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS), Prescott, AZ. The position serves as the administrative coordinator of all patient transportation for the facility and associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Responsible for the administrative coordination of all patient transportation for the Northern Arizona Veterans.
    • Coordinate stretcher van, wheelchair van, taxi and/or ambulatory transport schedules corresponding with authorized transportation requests.
    • Provide transportation for Inpatients, Outpatients and Domiciliary for Phoenix or Tucson medical appointments by checking on and van availability (regular, wheelchair or stretcher).
    • Able to work under pressure, exercising good judgment and make sound decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations, which must be made based on comprehensive knowledge of VA regulations, Circulars, VA Manuals, Medical Center Memorandums, Code of Federal Regulations, Policies and directives.
    • Ensure all transportation logs are complete and meets record management guidelines and must be able to provide accurate statistical data to supervisory and management personnel upon request.
    • Evaluate the medical and administrative information provided with specialized transportation requests, helps to determine and implement the most economical mode consistent 'with the veteran's needs.
    • Coordinate commercial air, stretcher van, wheelchair, regular van, taxi schedules and fares; ensuring tickets, and itineraries issued by the contract travel service office corresponds with travel authorized.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/29/2021.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

    • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: Responsible for the administrative coordination of all patient transportation for the Veterans Administrative Health Care System. This includes, but is not limited to, Commercial Air, Wheelchair Van, Stretcher Van, Regular Van, Contract Special Mode and Taxi. Determine patient needs, entitlements, eligibility, and travel requirements for patient transportation. Coordinate’s stretcher van, wheelchair van, taxi and/or ambulatory transport schedules corresponding with authorized transportation requests. Plans and arranges for commercial or contracted transport. Determines driver availability. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Coordinate and advises administrative and clinical staff regarding bed confirmation, transfer of records, transportation availability and approval criteria relating to transfer to other facilities. Coordinate’s patient movement activities between Veterans Transportation Network, Patient Travel and Engineering drivers. Your experience must be documented in your resumeOR,
    • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 4 years above high school. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (Transcripts required) OR,
    • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond post high school. (Transcripts required).

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary; however, some walking and standing may be required.
Work Environment: Work is performed in a medical center setting where there can be contact with patients who may have emotional disorders as well as a communicable disease. There is hectic interaction with other staffing the office. which may cause anxiety as well as mental and emotional stress.
